    My Private Folder

I was looking at My Private Folder today and found it very lacking.

I like the idea but I want something that isn't so 'in your face' I need something I can put a vanilla icon on and change the name so it's not so noticable.

Does anyone have a folder locking program they like?

I need privacy on my computer from a computer knowledgable spouse.

Most secure method is removable media. Flash memory stick (geek drive, thumb drive). After that, anything retained on the system is hackable via a key logging program. Additionally, if your spouse is persistent, they could employ timed screen captures via a watchdog program, and thus see anything you did on that PC.

Personally, I would use a removable hard drive on a laptop. Secure it in a combination locked safe, one that would be registered at the local lock and key locations to prevent his fabricating a story to break into the safe.

On top of that, operating offsite for your privacy would be the only additional way to safeguard your information.

I do need to mention data recovery capabilities. Depending on the cost the spouse is willing to accept, any activity that was done on a particular hard drive is recoverable unless the hard drive is physically destroyed. The only way to permanently destroy a hard drive is to disassemble the drive, and put each disk against a permanent magnet to erase all data. Formating the drive via any software method does not erase all data.

    Wow, Thanks. Giggle

I use a secure thumb drive at the moment.

I was just wanting something so the slightly curious didn't stumble on my cash of BDSM writing. He's apposed to porn.

I'm not really under serious investigation, but my computer is the printer computer and people tend to just sit down and help themselves.

When my last laptop died I ended up with a nice portable harddrive but don't have a safe. Giggle.

I really do appriciate the suggestions.

There are also encryption programs... you can encrypt some folders and leave others 'in the open.'

Even if someone hacks the file, it will be unintelligible except to the encryption program and then only with the 'key'

So that's how it is, huh? Didn't like my suggestion! LOL

Take a look at this AES encryption - data security, would paste the link but I'm not sure it would be allowed. Hope it helps you.

I did that was the problem. It got me thinking about having a lockable folder on my desktop. I just have the bad habit of seeing a lock and looking for a key and assume others are like me.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Remember you can remove the Desktop shortcut and My Private Folder then is only visible in Windows Explorer, not even in My Computer.

    Beautiful legs, by the way.

There is a program called Anti-Boss Key which will make some icons on your desktop (of your own choice, and the corresponding folders in My Computer) invisible unless you log in with the right password on the ABK software. It's a pay add-on, but rather inexpensive; could be a solution.

By the way, for those of us who use Windows XP, it's built to be a multi-user system, and it's kind of easy to add and manage personal user accounts on the same machine. To get to the main admin account on an XP machine, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and make sure you press Del twice (at same time as you're pressing down Ctrl and Alt) while the machine is starting up - do this while the ´screen is still black with just the Microsoft Windows logo. From the main admin account it's easy to set up new user accounts that you may protect with passwords, and if you install a program or put a bunch of pictures/videos/documents on this user's "personal folders", they won't be accessible to anyone else. Some of the software you normally use on your main account may never have been installe or figured for the Admin account ar the new acount you set up. so you might have to install them here (e.g. your internet browser or your Word processor might need to be brought in for this account)

Even if your own account has the property "administrator account" it's not necessarily the main admin account (I learnt this from a guy at Microsoft's support when trying to troubleshoot my pc).

oops, correcting myself a little from the advice above on how to log in on the main admin account: the point where you press ctrl-Alt-2 times Delete is not while the screen is black with the Windows XP logo, but at the login screen, when you'll normally log on to your personal account (assuming that you password-protected the accounts when you installed XP). If you do the trick at that point, thr screen goes black and you get a simple log-in frame for the Admin account (the password asked for is, most likely, the one you originally picked for your personal/with admin rights account).

If you've an IBM PC (or now Lenovo) you will probably have a program called Client Security Solution preinstalled. This has a componant (I can't remember the name off the top of my head) that lets you create a secure, encripted drive in a single file. You can store this file on a removable media (flash drive etc.) and upon insertion use the right-click-context-menu to mount it as a drive. This means that other than the application itself there are no traces of the drive on the PC at any other time. I've used this for all the time I've had my current laptop, just keeping the file in an obscure location on the hard drive.
